To compute global travel time to a city (50,000 people or more) of interest using land (road or offroad) and water (navigable river, lake or ocean) based travel.
Cost distance model requires two inputs, a target raster map containing the location for which you want to compute the travel time to and a friction surface raster where each pixel contains the estimated time required to cross that pixel.
Dataset contain global accessibility time of travel to any location based on road network, railway network, navigable rivers, major water bodies, shipping lanes, national borders, land cover, and urban areas.
Computations based on cost-distance algorithm between two locations on a raster grid using GIS data between 2007 and 2008 and the costs were measured in units of time to inform travelling time in minutes.
